Bullshead Reservoir

Introduction:
Located in southeastern Alberta, near the Cypress Hills, is Bullshead Reservoir. New regulations that have been implemented on this lake are providing us with phenomenal trophy rainbow fishing opportunities. These rainbows now range from 3-8lbs and each year means the fish are even bigger.

The fishing is actually quite easy as far as flyfishing lakes go, and with the right presentations, the fish are eager to take. Days of 20-30 fish/person were quite common in 2005 & 2006, with over half to 3/4 of the day's catch being 18 inches and up. The fishing here can only be described in one word "phenomenal".

Bullshead Reservoir is about a 3.5 hour drive from Calgary, but is do-able on a day trip if you are willing to go the extra mile for these fish...and stop at the local coffee shop at 5am on our way out! We are also offering all-inclusive package trips so that you can experience this lake for a few days at a time!

Fish Species:
Rainbow trout
to 28+ FAT inches (average16-22 inches)

Trip Options:
You may choose between full-day or multi-day packages in joining us to experience the rainbow hogs of Bullshead Reservoir. Please see our Trip Information page for our day trips, along with current rates. If you are interested in arranging a multi-day all-inclusive package to Bullshead, please contact us directly for more information, or consider including Bullshead Reservoir in one of our multi-day trip packages based out of the North Bow Lodge.

What to Expect:
If you choose to do a one (full) day trip to Bullshead, expect a very early departure from Calgary and very late return, as the trip will last at least 16hrs including driving time.

But more importantly, expect to be "wowed" by monster rainbows cruising the shallows and drop-offs just looking for that next morsel of food. The real "wow" comes when you set the hook on a take, and these big bruisers take off across the lake at full speed. Seeing your backing is a definite possibility each day.

We usually fish Bullshead as a "walk-and-wade" from the shoreline as the big fish come in and feed in the weeds each day, and frankly getting out on the water may be more of a disadvantage than an advantage most days because of prevalent winds. We do offer float tube trips if the weather allows and you're up to a long kick!

You should be aware that there are fewer fish over 25in in this lake than you may have heard, as although the fishery is protected by trophy regulations, it is not purely catch-and-release and many of the largest fish are harvested. Like all our trips, we only practice catch-and-release fishing at Bullshead to preserve the opportunity for double-digit days of 18in+ trout.

Depending on the season, we may fish small mayfly nymphs, scuds, chronomids, streamers, or even dries.

What You Need to Bring:
Please see our Trip Information page for what we provide during your trip. This speaks to those incidentals that help make your trip more enjoyable.

- hat
- headlamp or small clip-on flashlight
- camera
- sunscreen
- bug spray
- polarized glasses
- wind/rain/wading jacket
- hydration pack
- float tube or pontoon boat if you have one and would like to use it

Recommended Gear:
You are welcome to bring your own rod(s) and reel(s), flies, vest, etc. but keep in mind that we are pleased to offer the use of G&L FlyCraft rods matched with quality reels and line as well as all flies and terminal tackle you require.

Rods:
5-6wt Fly Rod with floating line for dry fly fishing and nymphing
6-7wt fly rod with floating or sinking tip line for streamer fishing

Leaders:
For most fishing, a 9ft 3-4X leader is usually all you need, though we may recommend adding 5X tippet if the fish are being selective.

For streamers, a short length of heavy butt section married to 20in or so of 0X-2X is often ideal.

Flies:
Contact us directly for current recommended flies for your trip to Bullshead Resevoir.

Waders & Boots:
Breathable CHEST waders are highly recommended coupled with supportive, felt-soled wading boots. If you do not own such they can be rented reasonably here.

Net:
We're happy to take care of the netting of all fish on your trip, but if you want to bring your own, think BIG! :)  The shallow, catch-and-release style nets do not work well on Bullshead fish. Look for one with a large opening and basket for extra insurance, and a longer or extendable handle.
